Join me with the Sonic Liberation Players for a concert of Acadian composer André Cormier’s “A Quatre Folioles.” The title is French for “four-leafed,” which in this instance implies the clover. The piece sets to music a historical correspondence between Brook Watson and Andrew Brown, in which Watson describes the return of the Acadians after their 1755 forced deportation.

André Cormier is an old school friend of mine from my time at the School of Music at the University of Victoria. He also has a connection to the rest of our ensemble from their time together at CalArts. André’s work has been presented in Canada, the US, Europe, and New Zealand. He has written for solo, small and large chamber ensembles, as well as music for opera, dance as well as collaborative work with visual artists. In 2008, he launched Éditions musique Sisyphe (www.emsis.ca), a publishing house primarily for experimental music scores; he also directs its performing branch, Ensemble Sisyphe. André maintains a busy schedule as a composer by fulfilling commissions and presenting work, all in an effort to greater understand what makes sound and silence so irresistible. He also finds the complement of cacao and sugar immensely intriguing.
